Computing Services supports the research, education mission, and associated administrative functions of Carnegie Mellon University. The Help Center provides students, faculty, and staff members with technical assistance and information about computing at Carnegie Mellon University Africa. Walk-in and phone hours are available Monday through Friday 8:30am-4pm.

Andrew user ID and password

Your Andrew Account provides you with access to many of the university’s computing services, such as the Carnegie Mellon Web Portal, computing clusters, and e-mail.

Find your account name and email address by visiting the Carnegie Mellon directory webpage.

Webmail

Students can access their Carnegie Mellon Africa Email account through WebMail, a web-based email service. Computing Services on the campus supports the Microsoft Outlook 2010 mail client.

Virtual Private Network (VPN)

CMU-Africa uses Cisco AnyConnect Virtual Private Network (VPN) client to create a secure connection, called a tunnel, between your computer and the server. This tunnel allows secure communications and the ability to connect to Carnegie Mellon resources off-site.

IMPORTANT: VPN does not eliminate the need for an Internet Service Provider (ISP). You must have a valid internet connection before you can connect to the VPN server.

Consider your downloading habits

If you shared your music, movie or app library at home, please close/turn off sharing before coming to campus. Otherwise, you could inadvertently share your library with thousands via the Carnegie Mellon network, which is a violation of the university’s Computing Policy.

Please note that, when requested, Carnegie Mellon is legally required to provide information about individuals who appear to be illegally downloading and/or distributing copyrighted materials (e.g., music, movies, and apps) on our network.

When downloading or sharing files, please follow these guidelines:

  • If you didn't pay for it, DO NOT download it.
  • Close/turn off sharing in iTunes (iTunes > Preferences > Sharing) or similar applications before you arrive on campus.
  • Consider disabling file sharing for other applications when you are not using them.
  • Review the Copyright Violation Guideline.

Software

Computing Services maintains campus licensing for a number of software products. Some of the software is available for download based on your affiliation (i.e. student, faculty, or staff member); other software products are available in the public computing clusters for anyone with a valid Andrew ID. Some software is licensed for sale through the Computer Sales area of the University Store at a discounted price.

These discounted prices include:

  • An academic discount for faculty, staff, and students when purchasing licensed Adobe and Microsoft software
  • Perpetual software licenses from Microsoft and Adobe for graduates. For Microsoft operating systems and MS Office, this includes the option to purchase upgrades.

You can access certain cluster software from anywhere using Virtual Andrew or Linux timeshares. To use the Virtual Andrew service, you will need to install the VMware View Client.
